retraite scientifique

i was at a so-called scientific retreat friday and saturday. basically a bunch of scientists with drinking problems holed up in a hotel in the laurentians for 24 hours. despite the excessive alcohol and dancing and general rowdiness that i typically enjoy at these events, for me the highlight was wandering around by myself, hungover, in the damp and foggy saturday morning-after, looking at the trees.

my bottle of achouffe brune was still on the table where i'd left it the night before when we were drinking in the heavily misting darkness. somewhat paradoxically, the morning fog and hangover made the colours extra vivid. i was also having fun experimenting with the focus and dreaming of my new (used) DSLR arriving soon from dan! plus i have an innate love of fuzzy pictures because that's how i naturally see the world with this -11 prescription of mine...

after a seemingly endless ride on a classic yellow school bus back to UdeM, there appeared the phallic glory that is roger gaudry, lovingly framed by more brilliant foliage. i have this great silkscreened print with the tower on it looming behind the words "j'aime laurence," it always cracks me up.

i love this building. it's one of the first things you can see when you're driving back into montreal from the north, it means you're almost home.

then, a lovely walk home through the side streets, admiring gardens and smiling at strangers and generally feeling that life is good. the walk home took twice as long as the walk there because i kept getting distracted by the details that i don't normally take in when i'm pedaling madly in montreal cyclist mode. oh the pretty colours!

autumn is my favourite season.
